Obituary for Donald Richard Wightman

Donald Richard  Wightman
Donald Richard “Don” Wightman, 81, of Grand Island FL went home to be with Our Lord on Saturday February 24, 2018 from Opis Bayview Center in Eustis FL.
Don was born August 22, 1936 in Massena NY to Ida & Ross Wightman. He was a United States Submarine Veteran, enlisting in the United States Navy right out of high school, and proudly served on board sub from 1954-1957.
Don was a retired carpenter with the Northeast Carpenters Union working for Werner Spitz Construction Co. in Rochester NY as foreman on commercial construction. After moving to San Antonio TX in 1981and then to Umatilla FL in 1985, he did various aspects of carpentry including work on the San Antonio River Walk, church building in various states including Florida, home building with his son, Brad, and later working at the Lake County Boys Ranch in their shop. He was a past member of the VFW Post 8087 Mt Dora, a member of American Legion Post 0347 Lady Lake and a life member of Am Vets Post 1992 Mt. Dora.
Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Christine Wightman whom he dearly loved with no doubt, of Grand Island FL and by his three sons, whom he loved and was so proud of: Clay (Mona) Wightman of San Antonio TX, Bradley (fiancé, Tamera Glaser) Wightman of Sorrento FL and Adam (Shellee) Wightman of New Braunfels TX and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ida Jean (Wayne) Milliman of Little Genesee NY along with many nieces, nephews, his mother-in-law, Catherine Conrad and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law on his wife’s side.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Henry Wightman and Ida Mae (Carter) Wightman, his infant sister, Norma Ellen and his brother Ross William (Elaine) Wightman of Weedsport NY.
A Celebration of Life for Don will be held Friday March 2, 2018 1:00 at Sunlake Estates Grand Island FL, in their community’s main clubhouse. There will be internment at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell FL with full Military Honors on Monday March 5, 2018 at 11:00.
