Obituary for Helen M Hartig (Scutt)

Born July 25, 1923 in New York State, Helen grew up and attended schools in New York State just before World War II, and was located in New Britain, Connecticut. She was employed at a defense plant during the war making war supplies needed for the armed forces. She was engaged to her husband at the time while he was serving in the army in Europe.

In 1945, Helen married the late Philip Hartig who was being discharged from his tour of duty. They were married for 66 years, having a family of two daughters, one son, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She is survived by daughters: Ellen Vorva of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Carol Dumas of Umatilla, FL; and son: Philip Jr. of Umatilla, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband: Philip Hartig.

Family was Helen and her late husband’s life. They did whatever work they could find to take care of their family. At the time, there were no freebies. Helen worked many, many years in the nursing profession.
She always enjoyed gardening and loved nature. Helen and her husband loved walking in their later years, which they walked most of Lake County and enjoyed recycling when that was the new craze.

They moved to Florida in 1987, which Helen thought was the best move they had ever made from Connecticut. She was always of the Methodist religion. God has always been there for Helen when she needed Him and says she knows at times He gets tired of hearing from her.

A graveside service will be held Monday, September 14, 2020, 11am at the Umatilla Annex. Arrangements entrusted to Beyers Funeral home of Umatilla, FL.
